Neonatal emergencies require rapid intervention to reduce the risk of death or long-term complications in newborns. In Zamfara State, the healthcare system faces numerous challenges, including limited access to healthcare facilities, inadequate staffing, and insufficient resources, all of which impact the ability of pediatric nurses to respond effectively to neonatal emergencies (Alhassan et al., 2024). Neonatal emergencies such as respiratory distress, birth asphyxia, and infections demand specialized knowledge, prompt action, and coordination between healthcare providers.
Pediatric nurses are often the first responders in neonatal emergencies, and their ability to assess and manage these situations directly influences patient outcomes. However, limited training, heavy workloads, and lack of equipment may hinder their response to neonatal emergencies in Zamfara State. This study seeks to appraise the response of pediatric nurses to neonatal emergencies in the state, identifying key factors that enhance or hinder their ability to provide timely and effective care.
Neonatal emergencies in Zamfara State are often associated with high mortality rates, partly due to delayed or inadequate responses by healthcare providers, particularly pediatric nurses. Despite the importance of prompt intervention, there is limited research on how pediatric nurses in the state respond to neonatal emergencies. This study will explore the factors that influence their response, including training, workload, and resource availability.
This study will focus on pediatric nurses in public healthcare facilities across Zamfara State, specifically those involved in neonatal care. Data will be collected through interviews, surveys, and observational assessments. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and variability in practices across different healthcare settings.
